Auditors highlight several critical areas in 1MDB's books

....After having acquired Tanjong’s power plants for a total of RM8.5bil, 1MDB also acquired the Genting group’s power generation unit for RM2.38bil.

....The existing concession agreements of the Malaysian power plants allow 1MDB to renew the power-purchase agreement with mutual consent for three additional terms of five years each. This means there is potential for an extension in the life of the power plants in Malaysia;

·1MDB incurred a goodwill of RM1.19bil for the purchase of the power plants from the Tanjong and Genting groups. This is the premium that it has paid for the assets

CIMB Research starts coverage of YTL Corp

KUALA LUMPUR: CIMB Equities Research has started coverage of YTL Corp with an Add rating and a target price of RM2, which is based on a 20% discount to realised  net asset value (RNAV) and offers an upside potential of 29%.

“A group-wide privatisation exercise could act as a key catalyst for the stock, while the Express Rail Link (ERL) extension to KLIA2 and new capacity at YTL Cement (YTLC) are immediate earnings drivers,” it said on Wednesday.

CIMB Research said YTL Corp used to be a proxy for exposure to YTL Power but its earnings profile is becoming evenly balanced following the privatisation of YTL Cement.

“New earnings drivers from the ERL and its significance in YTL’s bid for the High Speed Rail project to Singapore should further spur a re-rating,” it said.

The research house said YTL is believed to have gone ex-growth because of its size and reliance on YTL Power (YTLP) for its earnings. Not only did it manage to deliver an earnings CAGR of 14.7% over FY10-13, but the contribution of YTLP to its bottomline also fell from 73% to 48% during the same period.

“Most of this was due to the privatisation of YTLC but the trend in earnings rebalancing and growth is expected to continue with 30% more capacity at YTLC kicking in and the extension of the ERL to KLIA2 expected to increase ridership levels by 36%. Both these cumulative factors are the reasons why our FY15 EPSestimate is 14% above consensus,” it said.

CIMB Research forecasts an earnings CAGR of 7.7% over the next three years, largely capped by the decommissioning of YTLP’s Malaysian power plants in FY16 if its power purchase agreement (PPA) is not renewed.

“However, we are more than confident that YTL will be able to fill this vacuum with a new stream of earnings, whether it is M&A from YTLP or winning the High Speed Rail (HSR) project with the ERL,”  it said.

The research house explained the privatisation of YTLC illustrated how much value YTL can unlock with restructuring.

“If YTL repeats the same share swap exercise for its remaining listed subsidiaries – YTLP, YTL Land and YTL e-solutions – we estimate a potential FY15 EPSaccretion of 8.9%, with ROEs improving from 10.9% to 12.3% and DPS almost doubling.

“YTL’s valuations are likely to significantly re-rate if all three subsidiaries are folded into one singular entity,” it said.

YTL Comms to be profitable soon?

KUALA LUMPUR, April 4 — YTL Communications Sdn Bhd, a loss-making wireless broadband service provider, is optimistic that its business will be in the black soon.

“We currently have more than one million subscribers on the back of a very healthy average revenue per user (ARPU), so healthy that we feel very good about breaking even soon,” its chief executive officer Wing K. Lee (pic above) told Digital News Asia (DNA) after the official launch of its #YesToRio online game contest on April 3...............

While industry observers credit the 1BestariNet project for both the jump in subscribers and higher ARPU Wing referred, Wing said this is not true. “The [more than] one million subs excludes 1BestariNet.

“We treat (and count) 1BestariNet as a separate vertical — rightfully so, as we have provisioned multiple millions of users for 1BestariNet alone," he claimed.

Tenders being prepared for 2 gas power plants

PETALING JAYA: The tender documents for the construction and commissioning of two 1,000 MW gas-fired power plants code-named Project 4B are being prepared......

Ongkili declined to say where the sites under evaluation were.

However, one possible site could be near the Prai gas-fired power plant in Penang.

Ideally, the site of the new plant should be near an existing gas-fired power plant and that it should have facilities such as cooling water and gas pipelines.

It should also be near transmission lines so that it’s easier to connect the power into the national grid.

Though the plan is to have the gas-fired plant commissioned by 2020/21, the Government is also looking into the possibility of bringing the commission dates forward as demand for electricity continues to grow in the country.......

Remark: YTLP have upperhand in 4b, as it is gas fire power which is similar to YTLP exiting gas power in Prai

YTLP have RM 9 billion cash and RM 22 billion debt. But the debt is tight to concession asset and non recourse meet repayment on its own. Therefore, YTLP able to use most of the cash for acquisition, M&A and business expansion without need to worry debt level.

LTE roadmap

Wing said that the company will also be making announcements on its LTE (Long-Term Evolution) or 4G (Fourth Generation) plans in the near term.

Industry observers expect its incumbent vendor, Samsung, to remain in the picture and provide the LTE infrastructure. Wing declined to confirm or deny this, but said: “We are not ready to openly discuss our LTE strategy — that will be helping our competitors a bit too much.”

“When we designed our network, we designed it with [this] upgrade in mind. To upgrade to LTE is very simple; all we need to do is to add in a channel card,” he claimed. “We expect our LTE footprint to fully leverage the strength what we have -- a 4G all-IP (Internet Protocol) footprint that has over 85% population coverage across the nation.”
