MoneyMaker168 Dump US treasury. Dump them all. Let see who will suffer more.

I think That will spell the end of USD as reserve currency and the end of the money printing machine. No US government will make this decision

Posted by MoneyMaker168 > 2020-06-05 09:48 | Report Abuse

LOL, no it wouldn't, everyone would reduce trade with China because it will become more costly

Posted by QueenElizebeth IV > 2020-06-05 09:49 | Report Abuse

haha US dollar - if you stop all trades with USA, you do not need US dollar .
So be it .

The West are losing game to China. China thinks strategically making moves that will give advantage in generations. In contrast the West don't believe in long term strategy other than their own Game theory - postulating that the system works best if all the players in this system pursue their own short-sighted interest in their moments.
This theory is the best engine winning short battles. But it is not working for long term projects lasting generations simply because there are not enough agents in the system interested in outcomes beyond 1 generation lifespan. Either Western politicians or Western businesses they don't invest into something that will pay off in next life. This is our weakness where China hits us. To be exact, we are being hit by ourselves because we now lag behind the other fast developing world . To me it is no longer a question if China can overcome the West. The bigger question now is if China can overcome China. China will not succeed in outer World without changing in it's very core. If China claims to poses ancient wisdom then they should understand (or remember at least) that what you are trying to change or to shape actually changes and shapes yourself

As to the "nuclear" Swift button, China is rapidly preparing its own system . The started deploying it a year ago . That makes me think that this "leaked" Chinese "fear" and this specific post were carefully designed to seed this idea in Trump's head, because China actually wants this button be pressed by Trump later, but with all the havoc that would come after this event China doesn't want to be responsible for it. By the time when when Trump will press this Swift button, China will be ready to push all its trade partners to switch to their own superior global digital system that is being launched right now. There would not be a better reason to do so than the fact that the SWIFT would be disconnected from China.
Ideally, China will be ready in 10 month for this scenario .
But now they are not sure that the president capable of falling into this trap will be re-elected. Trump might not be around when China needs him . So they started playing earlier ahead of schedule hoping Trump will push this button before he is gone. This message is designed to seed the idea and to give an impression of big fear if that would happen.

China does hold US$1.1 trillion worth of US Treasuries securities. However the demand for US Treasuries is so strong that should China wish to sell its holdings, it will have little impact as they will be quickly purchased by others!

- The most effective financial weapon that the USA can employ against the PRC is to cut it out of the Western banking system. The EU may bicker bitterly but they would not want to lose their access to the US banking network.
- Such a move by the USA would cripple the Chinese economy and make the Yuan largely worthless. The PRC would have other options but they would be marginal at best.

SweetMemoryLane ....The West is Not losing the game. The West now sees the game for what it is and is radically adjusting its responses.

Correct me if i am wrong, No company is willing to leave china.... Even without usd, companies will use yuan to trade with china. And the yuan will become an alternative currency in the world. All the other countries will eventually accept yuan because china is a huge business partner that nobody can afford the lose.
For those company with short vision, they may leave china due to stupidity. After a few years, they will have to get back to china when they need to expand their business.
Business is about market size and populations. Google and see the populations in china.

Correction, no one wants yuan now! Because the US$ is the main currency of choice worldwide! Even the Soviet Union traded in US$ and its citizens only wanted to hold US$ at home. Many countries are holding ONLY USD not Yuan...

Posted by gooddaymate > 2020-06-05 10:08 | Report Abuse

Agree with LOVE IS IN THE AIR..... it will take at least 20 years to replace the USD based system, in line with the decline of USA ! Yikes

Posted by SweetMemoryLane > 2020-06-05 10:10 | Report Abuse

HI GothicRock, Most of what you have been using while writing this comment was made in China. The world is too addicted to Chinese products to abruptly cut it. They will continue to need it so contractors will continue to come to China. So China will give them new system more modern, faster and more secure. Yes Yuan will be in trouble but for a few years while the dollars system will be already blasted. Plus weaker Yuan will boost the demand again... Again China is playing long term.

Posted by SweetMemoryLane > 2020-06-05 10:10 | Report Abuse

HI gooddaymate,There is no decline of the USA. There is a decline of individualistic indulgence based economies. They are not sustainable long term. The future of the world is not in wining one system over another. Convergence of the systems is the answer. The west will have to become more like China in order to compete with China and the China will have to become more like West in order to compete with West. In the end it doesn't matter who wins and who declines. It will be the same winning order with the same principles and system. No matter how it is labelled: Liberalized China or Socialized West

By the way It will mean no one will keep USD as a reserve currency anymore and the US can no longer print its way out of any economic trouble. This country has grown so addicted to money printing that this simply will not happen

And Part of reason US economic decline is it addiction to using sanctions. When it thinks that it is punishing others, It is actually inflicting more harm on itself.

Yeah DoubleProsperity, When China dump the rest will follow and USD collapse in no time. Remember China is the world largest trading nation in volume. When China stop using USD other nations will find ways to trade with China, including US companies and consumers

I clearly see U.S are losing. U.S response to Covid has make it undeniable. Have to admit that Canada's capabilities to test Covid fell behind third world african countries . The US spending enormous amount of money on healthcare as a portion of GDP or as absolute sum no matter how we look at this was not able to serve much smaller population - we simply were not able to produce as many ventilators as China did in much shorter terms. The fatality is higher in the US than in China not because China has hidden the severity but because US healthcare system is not scalable and ill prepared . Look at Germans - they have even lower mortality than China. Why? Are they hiding anything too? Should I mention quickly build data centers and systems with petabytes of data information flow in order to manage and track the spread of disease. Everything was built at once . I can continue the list of where U.S are behind - G5, quantum radars, AI natural language processing , building skyscrapers in 7 days and fully equipped hospitals in 10. Yes Elon Musk sets new space suits fashion trends but what China does now is scaring me - they leading new development in CBDC block chain new protocols for business transactions. They are rewriting books of future and not just rewriting they are implementing them at full speed in the same manner they built these hospitals . This is scary. Sometimes I see this like alien technologies being deployed behind our back while we spend time discussing

DoubleProsperity, You are speaking about cutting a rope to the towing car that pulls your lagging vehicle . Once it is cut you will be left behind. This is actually what China wants - you to cut it.

RangeRover222 ! No need to fear. Change is always scary for the status quo. But you've answered your own worries: the fear is falling behind in areas that could improve our lives, such as environmental issues and even social issues, which have nothing to do with technology.

One of the reasons that the Dollar is the world's reserve currency is because that everyone can use it freely. In recent times, the US has been recklessly misusing its power by barring this or that country from the SWIFT system. This has undermined the very system the US created. Barring China would send the current system on the road to ruin. China would be hurt, but would cope, and would also accelerate the decline of the USD.

Posted by XxXTripleXxX > 2020-06-05 10:44 | Report Abuse

The US & China are Siamese twins! Apart from a nuclear war to separate them, they will be co-joined in happiness & destruction!
.
In fact faced with a serious falling economy (pandemic/riots) & +50 million growing unemployment, the US needs China even more for its treasuries to finance their stimulus package.
.
This proposal is M.A.D & I don’t think the US is suicidal yet!

Posted by RAMPAGE GODLIKE ! > 2020-06-05 10:46 | Report Abuse

DoubleProsperity, Once it's cut off from the system, it is going to China's economy as a whole including Hong Kong. HongKongers will support the US's decision. China has to know its decision to deprive Hong Kong of its freedom comes at a huge cost.

Posted by ChineseKungFuMaster > 2020-06-05 10:47 | Report Abuse

The issue about the Yuan and main reason why it still plays and will remain playing a minor role as international reserve currency (not only small in comparison to the US-Dollar and Euro but also in comparison to several other currencies) is, that it is not freely tradable and China has extensive capital flow controls. As long as this is the case, the Yuan won't be able to play a similarly large role as e.g. the US Dollar or Euro.
Beijing will need to decide: are they willing to sacrifice these restrictions to enhance the role of the Yuan, or are they not and consider e.g. the control of capital flows as more important.
