Go go. Price will shoot up in couple of days. AA might sell 10% of its stake to SK Group frm south korea for RM1 per share. That news came out 3 weeks ago. Might close the deal in July before QR is released. Anyone agree with me?

KUALA LUMPUR/SINGAPORE (June 4): Malaysia's flagship budget carrier AirAsia Group Bhd is evaluating proposals for raising capital to strengthen its equity base and liquidity, the company said in a statement Thursday.

AirAsia said it has been presented with proposals from investment bankers, lenders and potential investors to help the airline "weather the storm" caused by the new coronavirus pandemic.

It also has ongoing deliberations with a number of parties for joint-ventures and collaborations that may result in additional investments in specific segments of the group's business, it said in the bourse filing.

The airline said it may soon reach a decision on the proposals and amount to be raised.

"Any decision made will take into account the Company's business needs and the interests of the Company, its shareholders and other stakeholders," it said.

The airline made the statement in response to a report by local newspaper The Star citing sources saying AirAsia was in talks to sell a 10% stake to South Korea's SK Holdings through a private placement.

SK Holdings, the third largest Korean conglomerate with businesses spanning memory chips to energy, and AirAsia have been locked in negotiations for the past few months and SK sees a stake purchase as an opportunistic acquisition, said one source aware of the matter.

The source said AirAsia had been pitching to get an investor outside the aviation sector.

AirAsia chief Tony Fernandes said in April that the airline was seeking a government loan, as the industry began to take a hit from the virus outbreak

AmBank Research says the Covid-19 pandemic has resulted in a steep contraction in port throughput, a total collapse in demand for air travel and disruption to logistics services, particularly international mail and parcels. It expects container throughput at the ports to recover to pre-Covid-19 levels only in 2022.

Affin Hwang Capital Research is also maintaining an “underweight” call on the transport and logistics sector and giving the aviation segment a miss for the time being owing to the difficult business environment.

“While we expect a gradual relaxation in cross-border travel in the coming months to increase air passenger traffic, the recovery may be slow and we do not expect passenger volumes to return to pre-Covid-19 levels even by 2021,” its analyst Isaac Chow says in a strategy report on June 16.

GENEVA (July 1): The global tourism industry will lose at least US$1.2 trillion this year, amid crippling travel restrictions and consumer wariness during the coronavirus pandemic, according to a report Wednesday from the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development.

The losses, equal to 1.5% of the world economy, could balloon to S$3.3 trillion if the hit to international leisure travel persists until March 2021, with the harshest effects afflicting developing and island nations, according to the Geneva-based agency’s report.

The collapse of tourism could cost Jamaica 11% of its gross domestic product and reduce Thailand’s GDP by 9%, UNCTAD said. Other hot spots like Kenya, Egypt and Malaysia could lose more than 3% of their GDP, the report said.

Relying on Tourists

The lost revenue may translate into a sharp rise in unemployment in those countries with the potential for wages to drop by 12% in Thailand, 11% in Jamaica and 9% in Croatia.

Wealthier nations with more diversified economies like France, Greece, Italy, Portugal, Spain and the US also stand to lose billions of dollars in tourism revenue, the report said.

Chief executive officer Guillaume Faury (pic) said the company’s output would be 40% lower than expected for two years due to a dramatic slump in demand for aircraft, and has previously warned it is bleeding cash.

PARIS: Airbus SE embarked on the most extensive restructuring in its history, setting out plans to cut 15,000 civil-aerospace jobs as it attempts to steer through the crisis brought on by the coronavirus pandemic.

The European planemaker will eliminate more than 10,000 positions across its main bases in Germany and France, part of an 11% reduction in global headcount, according to a statement.

Chief executive officer Guillaume Faury (pic) said the company’s output would be 40% lower than expected for two years due to a dramatic slump in demand for aircraft, and has previously warned it is bleeding cash.

“The crisis the aviation sector is facing will be of a length and magnitude that calls for more structural and wide-ranging actions, ” the CEO said in a video message.

“We need to act now by adapting our workforce to reflect the new situation.”

Airbus will look to cut 1,700 jobs in the UK, 900 in Spain and about 1,300 in other countries by mid-2021, the jet maker said.

Voluntary measures such as early retirement would be the main part of the process, with compulsory cuts a “last resort, ” Faury said. Airbus slipped 0.3% yesterday in Paris. The shares have declined more than 50% this year.

The plans will be subject to union agreement, and faced swift criticism from the French government. The extent of the job cuts is “excessive, ” the finance ministry said in a statement, adding that the company must do all it can to limit the number of forced retrenchments.

While the French government has been vocal in rejecting job cuts at companies in which it has a stake, including Renault SA, Air France-KLM, it has also acknowledged that revamps are needed in light of the economic shock.

Airbus has about 135,000 employees globally, with almost 81,000 of those in the hard-hit commercial-aviation division.

Airlines and their workers have felt the initial impact from the travel slump, while their suppliers like Airbus and engine maker Rolls-Royce Holdings Plc have seen prospects dwindle, forcing tough decisions.

Air France is preparing to announce about 7,500 cuts, part of a total that surpasses 160,000 across European airlines, aerospace manufacturers and airports, based on data compiled by Bloomberg.

Caught in an aircraft-market slump that Airbus said could last three to five years, the company is striving to bring down costs while avoiding political and labour tensions in its home nations.

US rival Boeing Co is in a similar predicament, and said in late April it would reduce its workforce by about 10%, or about 16,000 jobs, to conserve cash.

“This is a prudent move by Airbus because things will be very different post-Covid-19, ” said Shukor Yusof, founder of aviation consulting firm Endau Analytics in Malaysia.

“In the next two to three years, there are going to be more casualties among airlines.”

Unions criticised the move, with the IG Metall labour group dismissing the announcement as “short-sighted” and accusing Airbus of using the virus as a pretext for reducing the workforce. The Unite union, which represents Airbus’ UK workers, called on the British government to “step up to the plate” to protect the sector like their French and German counterparts.

“I know everybody would like to see me saying there will be no forced layoffs, ” Faury said on a call with reporters.

“I cannot exclude that at the end we will not get there. That’s the hard reality I don’t like, that probably governments and my social partners don’t like either.” — Bloomberg
