Japan's Shionogi & Co. has announced that a drug it is developing to treat a new coronavirus strain is expected to be effective against the Omicron strain.

　According to Shionogi, an in-house experiment using an Omicron strain obtained from the National Institute of Infectious Diseases (NIID) showed that the drug, which is being developed as a treatment for the new coronavirus, suppressed the growth of the virus. Shionogi says that the mutated Omicron strain is also expected to be effective.

　Shionogi's drug is expected to be effective in preventing severe cases of the new coronavirus and improving symptoms such as fever and cough, and is currently in the final stage of clinical trials.

　Shionogi aims to file for approval by the end of this year, and will produce enough for one million people by the end of next March.

(CNN) Angelique Coetzee, president of the South African Medical Association, said Thursday that the number of cases of the new coronavirus in the country has begun to decline. South Africa is the first country in the world where a variant of the new coronavirus, the Omicron strain, has been confirmed.

Mr Coetzee told CNN: "The number of people infected is somewhat over the hill and is starting to decline slightly. In Gauteng, which was the epicentre of the outbreak, there has been a big drop in numbers," he said.
He pointed out that in other parts of South Africa the disease was still spreading because of the year-end holidays, but said: "If you look at our figures, the overall picture is declining.

He also said there had been no spike in mortality from the Omicron strain and that the severity of symptoms in infected people was "significantly less" than with the Delta strain.

JOHOR BARU: The sale of bus and air tickets to Singapore under the Vaccinated Travel Lane (VTL) has been suspended following the island republic’s decision to freeze cross-border travel due to the rising number of imported Covid-19 cases.

Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin (pic) said ticket sales for VTL-Land and VTL-Sea travel are suspended effective Dec 23 until Jan 20.

(Reuters) - Thailand will reinstate its mandatory COVID-19 quarantine for foreign visitors and scrap a quarantine waiver from Tuesday due to concerns over the spread of the Omicron variant of the coronavirus.

The decision to halt Thailand's "Test and Go" waiver means visitors will have to undergo hotel quarantine, which ranges between 7 to 10 days.
