I make a picture for lazy guys who lazy to do research, keep on bashing and dont even bother to understand AA business model.

https://i.imgur.com/8K1weV2.png

AA business model is like a Bell Curve, why there is a free seat? Why u cant secure a cheap ticket ? When you are paying normal ticket price?
This picture covers all.

Overall, AA fare (budget airline) is still cheaper as compared to service airline such as Singapore Airline, JAL, ANA and others.

Simply said: Higher jetfuel cost, higher load factor to break even.
So what is the breakeven load factor % for the given fuel cost ?
U pandai pandai research la, if u able to modulate this formula, I am sure u already on-board and judge this stock is under/over value.

If you are in airlines industry you should know that any new route (low demand) is like burning money before it can make any money. Only mature routes with high load factor/demand are the one making the money.

Excerpts from CGSCIMB report

Singapore Airlines (SGX: C6L)

Upgrade SIA from Reduce to Add on likely strong 2HFY24F results, and our final DPS expectation of 40 Scts, implying a final dividend yield of 6.2%.

Pax demand remains strong, cargo yields rose sharply in Oct-Dec 2023, jet fuel prices have dropped, and a key competitor is struggling with capacity.

We raise our TP to S$6.91 on higher core EPS estimates, based on a higher CY24F P/BV of 1.2x (+2 s.d. above mean), from 1.15x previously.

Re-rating catalysts from strong pax and cargo demand in 2HFY24F
Singapore Airlines (SIA) is releasing its 3QFY3/24F (Oct-Dec 2023) business update on 20 Feb 2024. We expect SIA to deliver 3QFY24F PATAMI of c.S$800m, followed by PATAMI of c.S$700m in 4QFY24F.

Consequently, we forecast 2HFY24F PATAMI of S$1.5bn, slightly better than 1HFY24F’s PATAMI of S$1.44bn and higher than 2HFY23’s S$1.2bn.

The strong 3QFY24F performance would likely be driven by the continuing strong passenger airline PLF of 87-88% in Oct-Nov 2023 and which we think will likely keep yields elevated in 3QFY24F.

What surprised us positively was SIA’s strong cargo performance in the closing months of 2023, with average monthly FTK in Oct-Nov 2023 higher by 6% against the monthly average in Jul-Sep 2023 and the Oct-Nov 2023 CLF also 3.4% pts higher vs. Jul-Sep 2023.

We expect CLF to rise to 59% in the Dec 2023 seasonal peak (+4.7% yoy), due to robust e-commerce trade between China and Europe/the US.

The Baltic Exchange Air Freight Index, representing cargo yields, rose an average of 30% in Oct-Dec 2023 (vs. Jul-Sep 2023) due to the higher demand, albeit still lower on a yoy basis.

Disruptions in container shipping on the Red Sea/Suez Canal routing since mid-Nov 2023 as a result of Houthi rebel attacks, and the resulting lengthening of shipping times between Asia and Europe, may also work to the benefit of air freight demand.

Lower jet fuel prices; competitors’ capacity struggles; bumper DPS
Lower jet fuel prices could also help SIA’s results, having declined from a recent peak of US$128/bbl in mid-Sep 23 to US$100/bbl currently. We estimate that SIA’s all-in jet fuel price for 3QFY24F may still increase to US$114/bbl (from 2QFY24’s US$98/bbl).

Meanwhile, competitor Cathay Pacific (293 HK, Not Rated) is said to be struggling to restore its capacities, with the Straits Times and Reuters reporting that Cathay continues to face pilot shortages, forcing it to cancel flights in Dec 2023 and for the Feb 2024 Lunar New Year.

We expect a bumper final DPS of 40 Scts in May 2024F, in addition to the 10 Scts interim DPS declared in Nov 2023, taking the FY24F dividend payout to 53% (similar to FY23’s 58%).

Our forecast of 40 Scts final DPS implies a 6.2% yield, which is very good for a six-month holding period, in our view. Downside risks include rising competition as other airlines restore their fleet, and an unexpected surge in jet fuel prices.

Valuation/Recommendation
We upgrade our recommendation on SIA from Reduce to Add. We have recognised the strong revenue dynamics of its passenger airline business over the six-month period from Oct 2023 to Mar 2024.

Boeings woes from half way across the world will limit the fleet growth of Malaysian carriers, in our view.

Consequently, we believe it is unlikely that the Malaysian aviation industry will experience overcapacity this year.

This will help airlines maintain a floor on fares but preclude MAHBs Malaysia passenger traffic from recovering to pre-COVID levels. We like non-Boeing operators CAPITALA and AAX. Notwithstanding the above, we still like MAHB for its potentially positive new OA.

Capital A (formerly AirAsia Group):

Capital A (previously known as AirAsia Group) has a history of revolutionizing the travel industry in Asia by making flying affordable for everyone.
While it has faced challenges, its transformation into a diversified group with ventures beyond airlines (such as food delivery and gateways) indicates adaptability and resilience.
However, it does not fit the typical Cigar Butt profile, as it is not a distressed company but rather a dynamic player in various sectors.

Kenanga: Tough operating environment for AirAsia: jet fuel costs accounted for 40% of the total group cost...

https://themalaysianreserve.com/2019/09/25/kenanga-tough-operating-environment-for-airasia-over-medium-term/

note: this is old news but still relevant as AA's fuel costs are priced in USD and air tickets are priced in MYR. It is a simple math logic. Last time they collected RM3.8 to pay for USD1 fuel costs and now they have to collect RM4.8 to pay for USD1 of fuel costs. Our minister of economy has underestimated the devastating impact of weakening ringgit as our household debt has reached the alarming level.

ERDOGAN’S ECONOMIC POLICIES
Turkey has been plagued by a currency crisis and skyrocketing inflation since 2021, which economists say are the result of Erdogan’s unorthodox belief that raising interest rates will increase inflation.

Simsek said Turkey had no other option but to return to “rational ground.” In a sign that Erdogan’s new administration might pursue more conventional economic policies, Simsek also said there were no “shortcuts or quick fixes” but vowed to oversee Turkey’s finances with “transparency, consistency, accountability and predictability.”

As you said, "this is an old news that was published 5 years ago but still relevant as AA's fuel costs are priced in USD and air tickets are priced in MYR. It is a simple math logic. As far as Technical Cycle Analysis for trading, Capital A, above 0.88 is bullish, below 0.88 is bearish. Right now Mabel is waiting for the breakout signal. Can you enlighten is what you mean a key date to watch, total solar eclipse on April 8, 2024 will cross North America, passing over Mexico, the United States, and Canada.

Is Stony trying to say a very very big cash call coming?

Tan Sri Tony Fernandes said AirAsia plans to raise as much as US$600 million (RM2.87 billion) in the coming months as he tries to pull off a merger between his two aviation businesses — long-haul carrier AirAsia X Bhd and short-haul airline AirAsia, which is currently a unit under Capital A Bhd.

Following the merger, which is expected to conclude mid-year, the new entity will look to raise up to US$400 million via selling equity, Fernandes said. Citigroup Inc and US advisory bank Evercore Inc have been appointed to lead the capital raising. A US$200 million revenue bond, securitised against revenue from new routes, is also expected to be finalised soon, he said.

22 Dec 2023: Capital A triggered Practice Note 17 (PN17) criteria in July 2020 after external auditors EY issued an unqualified audit opinion with material uncertainty regarding on-going concern.

https://theedgemalaysia.com/node/695050

note: both are old news but still relevant for investors who think they see the light. With NTA minus 2 MYR it is quite difficult to do right issue as SC will not allow a company to do right issue below par value (or something like that) unless they do something like capital reduction. Airline is a complicated business as they have high fixed costs and huge exposure to international oil prices. The last day to submit the PN17 restructure plan is June 30, 2024 and according to chart analysis it has entered structural bear market unless ringgit fiasco will end soon but quite unlikely as the politicians who know nothing about Economics 101 failed to understand what is USD carry trade and our interest rate cycle is lagged behind the curve. If ringgit keep falling down, BNM will have no choice but to raise the interest rate and that also will kill those company flooded with heavy debt and also the private homeowners loaded with heavy property loans.

I have been following closely Tony and AirAsia/Capital A Bhd on this and it is clearly not a rights issue for Capital A Bhd. Watch this clip at the 4 min mark, he said that he plans to raise $300m-$400m for the aviation group.

I could be wrong but I think they are planning to raise that money through an IPO for their aviation group in the US and raise $400m based on the interview at the 3min+ mark, I am guessing they are valuing the aviation group somewhere between USD$2b-USD$4b since most IPOs sell about 10%-20% of their shares. That's probably what they meant by "selling equity". If they want to do an ordinary rights issue, why would they engage with Evercore?

This is what Stony tell every Tom, Dick and Harry in Nov 2023:
Capital A plans to list its AirAsia brand royalty business and aircraft leasing unit in the US through Nasdaq-listed special purpose acquisition company Aetherium Acquisition Corp (GMFI). The group seeks an indicative valuation of US$1 billion (RM4.65 billion) for the listing exercise.

06 Oct 2020: Besides a steep haircut for creditors, the long-haul low-cost carrier also proposed a capital reduction of 90% of its issued share capital in order to offset its accumulated losses. This means a reduction of RM1.38 billion from its share capital.

https://theedgemalaysia.com/article/airasia-x-creditors-take-steep-haircut-debt-restructuring-scheme

note: this is old news but still relevant to those investors who see light as the debt restructuring scheme should be similar in nature but Capitala will involve some kind of reserve takeover by US entity so the question is after all this haircut and that haircut and eventually how much hairs will remain for existing investors is an unsolved mystery.

So who should you believe: Executive chairman of Thai AA and Thai AAX or Stony?

However, the executive chairman of Thai AirAsia and Thai AirAsia X told The Nation newspaper late last week that those two entities may continue to operate under their present ownership structure until as far out as 2027.

"The merger of two airlines in Thailand may have to wait two to three years until Thai AirAsia X leaves the business rehabilitation plan, which should happen around late 2025,” Tassapon Bijleveld said. Thai AirAsia entered into bankruptcy protection in May 2022, at the time saying doing so would allow it to manage better debts incurred earlier in the pandemic.

AAX already owns 49% of Thai AirAsia X, with the remainder in the hands of Thai investors. However, the buyout would see AAAGL's 43% stake in Thai AirAsia go to AAX. External Thai-based investors also hold a 38% stake on Thai AirAsia, while the airline's board and management, including Bijleveld, hold the remaining 19%.
