WAIT. PROTON BEING SOLD TO… CHINA!? SHOULD WE BE HAPPY OR NOT?

We all know Proton, right? Either as Malaysia’s national carmaker or the positively charged subatomic particle. Thankfully for everyone involved, this article is about the carmaker.

We’ll get into all the nitty-gritty details later in the article but, as a quick summary, Proton is in the middle of serious negotiations with foreign car manufacturers looking to buy into the company. While the details are a secret for now – to the point that only one of them confirmed that negotiations were happening – they are expected to finalize an agreement by March 31st this year.

The two foreign manufacturers currently in the lead are Geely, a Chinese manufacturer that bought Volvo in 2010; and Groupe PSA, a French manufacturer most known for Peugeot and Citroën. And what they’re negotiating isn’t small potatoes either – Geely is rumored to be leading the negotiation with an interest to buy a 51% equity stake in the company. If you haven’t watched Shark Tank, this means that they will basically own enough shares (Majority shareholder) to have a major influence on how the company is run.

Of course, this news has resulted in some criticism with the brunt of it coming from the guy who started Proton in the first place – Dr. Mahathir.

Agreed. Sell off pressure remain persistent next week unless there is some latest update to counter this. Contrarians definitely sell off their shares due to uncertainty regardless of real/fake. Plus the public's perception after reading this piece of news will take it negatively.

Why cant Li Shufu said "he's planning"? Why not just say "he has decided"? Is this the way a so-called billionaire make a statement? If decided to cancel just say cancelled laa.. end of story.

Anyway.. A representative for PSA reiterated an earlier comment that the group was “willing to go further” with Proton. PSA CEO Carlos Tavares said last week that a decision on the Proton bid is expected in spring. Good.

let's get into the mind of the BOD of DRBH.

what is the reason they are "sekejap nak, sekejap tak nak jual" mentality.

price factor? proton already losing money what...been so many years, and why still so sombong to nego price lagi when ada buyer???

maybe they have PLOTs. they COULD ALSO in the midst of negotiating IF ---after 2-5 years proton already turn around by China to become a profitable company, the BOD "may" have the intention to buy back the shares from Geely...

I am pretty strong there are "terms" they are not agreed upon.

ALSO, the the people of DRBH that needs to be Proton still. many times, this is the issue. bila sudah jual company, orang lama also want to stay back to supervise/supersede the management. ada-adalah perangai sesetengah org "Malaysia"

Proton bangsa negara.

DRBH deal have concern with Mahathir more, I believed. he and syed mokhtar for SUREEEE want some terms besides money in concern.

One of the fear of Mahathir is when China entreprenuers are buying into TOO MANY assets of our country. By making Proton as another add-on, Mahathir will have goosebumps. anyway, petronm is doing well these few days.

when tycoon and politicans involved, CEO also cannot say anything. makes sense. next week will be crucial for DRBH. I forsee China will still get the deal.

Buying a stake in proton may exclude the land from the deal. Geely will want to buy the land at cheap. PSA may want it on lease. I dont know where is the rm2.5B come from. But till they sell it, it will be just part of the NTA of rm3.1. Till the day we see the light in Proton, till then DRBH will not go pass RM2 or even rm1.80. The effect of rumours could be very deadly. When rumours become reality, we will see stability in the share price. This rumours without clarification, will create fear and panic. Till anyone confirm on this whether Geely pulling or not, expect share to go down. It doesnt matter Geely is pulling out or not. The most importantly is confirmation. Geely pulls out will leave PSA in driving seat.

Proton is still a gem waiting to be polished by foreigners.

Let it be French or China-nese. Both equally competitive in the automotive industry. Proton has been in the car market since the early 1980s.

They have what it takes to survive this long and with this long experiences, Proton still "something"

I have no question if the foreign partners comes in, proton can transform to be bigger market share in the region.

Sooner, we will hear, on the street, everyone is asking to buy "PROTON"

If shares down, I collect.

Proton would have gone bankrupt decades ago without the government ponying up billions every year. In other word Proton is nothing! Proton management wants to be the ones controlling the decision-making process (and making all the bad decisions) yet they want foreigners to inject billions of dollars into Proton to keep it afloat. In management's delusional mind they thought Proton has been a great success story in the auto industry! Perhaps they also want no retrenchment of workers (only more hiring) as part of the deal.

Calvin's faith in DRB is holding firm.

DRB's boss Syed Moktar is a very clever UNMO Veteran

I saw PTP acquiring those Gelang Patah lands for I think, about Rm100K per acres near PTP Port. Today they are worth many millions today.

I also saw Syed Moktar took over UM Land which develops Bandar Sri Alam. The Show Office in Bandar Sri Alam is an example of a First Class Company.

And this delay with Geely & PSA might be due to the utilization of Proton City Lands

The land value alone of those 55.44 million sf or 1,200 acres of industrial lands are worth Rm2.5 billions today. Not counting the facilities already built. (If only Felicity knows what facilities Proton built!) DRB already sacrificed the JV with Malakoff to develop solar cells on these prime lands.

Another treasure is LOTUS. How much is LOTUS worth on its own?

Only DRB & Syed Moktar are privy to these real reasons

I think since Geely already made a success out of Volvo the next best move would be using LOTUS Technology to capture the Sports Car Market


A normal car made only 6% to 8% while a high performance car can make 16% to 18% profit

And with huge 1 over billion population in China there is economy of scale
